Easy and Cheap Gift For Your Toddler or Preschooler

Last Christmas I had a toddler boy who loved tools and Bob the builder, so I got the idea to make him a tool box slash workbench. The goal was to give him a place of his own, where he could store all his building toys, with some features that would spark ideas, facilitate building, and encourage creativity.

But after I had built it I realized that it was useful for way more than that, for girls as well as boys and for all types of different interests.

Lemme show you the final product first, then talk about other gift ideas and how to build your own.

As you can see, with just a different paint scheme this could be ANY kind of work station!

  • Barby barber shop / doctor office / mall
  • Monsters and animals lair
  • Craft table
  • Art station
  • Race car garage and arena
  • Dressup trunk and studio
  • Puzzle station

Can you think of more? Comment below…

Some things to keep in mind if you do your own:

  • Keep it cheap by using scraps
  • Ask family, friends, neighbors for scrap – they may be glad to get rid of it!
  • Sand scrap well and look for nails to pull out for safety
  • Paint before assembly for cool multi color look, or after assembly if you wanna hide all screws and nails.
  • Screws for durability, nails for convenience…mind depth for both
  • Sand all corners and edges really well to round them…cause you know, kids.
  • Use slow-closing hinges, sold at Lowes/Home Depot for kitchen cabinets. Important to prevent finger smashes.
  • Cross beams on the legs are more important the skinnier or looser they are.
  • Attach extra hinges, latches, bells, and whistles…any little hardware you can find for more fun.

[Recipe] 2-Ingredient Cookies: Easiest in the World

Sorry, this one won’t help you much in the healthy category, but they sure are easy!

  •  1 can of pumpkin – 30 oz (or even 3/4 a can, they are really moist already!)
  • 1 box of spice cake mix
  • Thats it!

In our case, we didn’t have spice cake on hand, but everyone has a yellow cake around, right? Just add:

  • Whatever spice you can find. We had allspice, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice.

Mix. No seriously, that’s all there is to it.

It is really light and fluffy.

Cover a cookie sheet with either:

  • parchment paper or
  • cooking spray

and blob ’em on.

  • Cook for 13 – 15 min (possibly even less)
  • At 350

By the way, if you use cooking oil and your cookie sheet is a bit warped, these are so light they might slide a bit! :)

While they don’t need it, you can make a simple, quick frosting glaze with:

  • Powdered sugar
  • Vanilla
  • Milk
  • Butter

Basically whatever amounts of each, you can’t really mess this up.

Drizzle. No seriously, I told you this was easy.

Those darker ones have a little cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice in the slatherin’ sauce.

Did I mention that they are really moist and light? As you can imagine with just the cake plus pumpkin.

The whole think takes 20, maybe 30 minutes and the result is delicious!

[Recipe] Quick Snack for Family Fun Night – Fruit and Yogurt Smoothie

This is the simplest recipe ever, but there are a couple things you can do to always have a quick, easy, healthy snack around for the family to share.

  1. Always have a few bags of frozen fruit in the freezer – best advice ever! You can use them in so many healthy quick snacks, they keep forever, and they are already cut up and easy!
  2. Invest in a good blender (Ninja!) – smoothies are easy and you can just sorta throw whatever healthy things you have around into one quickly for a snack, and sneak a serving of veggies in for the kids!

Seriously don’t get hung up on a recipe for smoothies, just keep it healthy, include at least one fruit that is pretty sweet, and think about thinks that usually go together for the most part. See below for a second bonus smoothie recipe, but for this family snack we used:

  • 1.5 cups frozen strawberries
  • 1.5 cups frozen mangos
  • 1.5 cups plain (unsweetened) Greek yogurt

Blend. Yup, its that easy! The juice from the fruits makes it liquid enough (it may help to slightly defrost), and you can add ice if you want a more frozen drink, but it really doesn’t have to be complex!

20160320_204341Add it all to a big family-size cup and some colorful straws (add them to the things to keep on hand – kids love picking them out!), and you have a delicious snack that is quick enough not to disrupt family time but full of vitamins and energy.

Bonus Recipe

Nick sometimes goes all out and mixes all kinds of crazy things to make a whole meal in a smoothie, so just to give you the idea of the types of things you can throw in for a quick meal:

  • 1 Whole Apple (just take off stem, wash, and quarter. Seeds will blend)
  • 1 Banana
  • 1 Carrot (after everything you won’t even taste it. Peel and wash and throw in whole!)
  • 1 “squirt” honey
  • 1 “handful” Oatmeal
  • 1 “sploosh” Yogurt
  • 1 Cup Milk
  • 1 Protein – either a couple Tbs nuts or Peanut butter, or for a much more healthy and tasty route: Plexus 96

Blend for a huge amount of vitamins, a full meal, and a boost of energy and head out the door in just a few minutes.

Snowmen: Never Miss This Sneaky Family Exercise

This one is so obvious! Don’t ever be too lazy to get out and roll some snow!

  • Of course it is a family-time activity. Kids love it, and everyone is involved!
  • It is suprisingly hard work! Guaranteed you will work up a healthy sweat.
  • It is fun and distracting, alot easier than many work outs and more fun than some family activities.
  • Educational – teach them about snow, states of matter, trial and error, etc. Don’t shy from looking up answers to any tough questions they may ask!

Christmas Eve Soup Buffet

Bre made this fancy-pants soup buffet for our Christmas Eve dinner. Choose a few favorite soups and set them out with a simple side or two. Sometimes soup can seem too somple or boring but Bre’s presentation made me crave it!

  • If you want this meal to be healthy as well as obviously cheap and easy, don’t skimp on cheap soups. Get premium soups with better ingredients, and some veggies snuck in.
  • Choose the lowest sodium, not the lowest price. Soup is already cheap enough, and is notoriously high in sodium.
  • Maybe only go with one creamy soup. They tend to be fattier.
  • Try some mixes. Put two together for a new flavor.

You can see Nori getting ready to enjoy, and as I told Colin, its “yummy yumcicles”!

5th Day of Plexus: MegaX

We frequently hear about the benefits of Omega-3’s and how they contribute to brain and heart health. We are encouraged to add fish to our menus at least 3 times weekly or add a Fish Oil supplement…BUT how many people don’t like fish?! How many people don’t like fish burps from the fish oil supplements?! These are common reasons that we, as Americans, don’t consume enough of these ESSENTIAL fatty acids. Plexus has created a PLANT-BASED supplement from the AHIFLOWER plant with not only Omega-3 and 6, but also 9, 5 and 7! These are so great for you and really aid in stress management, relaxation, sleep AND:
Omega-3: important role in brain function and may help fight against cardiovascular disease
Omega-6: antiinflammatory properties
Omega-9: cholesterol, immunity, healthy blood sugar levels
Omega-5: positive effect on weight, cardiovascular health and blood sugar balance.
Omega-7: antioxidant and anti-aging properties, positive effect on healthy weight loss and bowel regularity
